I’m a fairly new comic book reader. I only started getting into them about two years ago and have been slowly inching my way into them and have only just scratched the surface. I’m still trying to get a lay of the land and it is a lot of area to cover. In the debate between Marvel and DC comics, I am a Marvel girl. Marvel is creating content that I want to read and willing to pay for. I’m also a huge fan of everything that is coming out of Image Comics too. Everything they are publishing is bloody fantastic. I certainly do have my favourites and these are some of them.
Ms. Marvel (Marvel)
Writer: G. Willow Wilson, Art: Adrian Alphona
Kamala Khan is a teenage girl living in New Jersey who is of Pakistani descent. She also happens to be Muslim and an Inhuman with shapeshifting powers. She’s awesome! The comics follow Kamala as she tries to understand her powers, where they came from, how to use them and use them for good, taking out bad guys, all while trying to balance every other aspect of the life. The comics are wonderfully written and so well crafted and the art is gorgeous in every panel. I’ve loved reading her journey as a hero, how she’s stumbled and how she has triumphed. I’ve loved reading her journey as she tries to balance her daily life of school and family with her duties as a hero. Kamala’s journey is one that I want to continue to read and follow and watch she flourishes even more. If you haven’t read it, give it a try.
Ms. Marvel is currently in its second series. You can pick up the first four trades (collected editions) of series one through most major bookstores, your local comic book stores, Amazon, and Comixology.

Cindy Moon is a female Asian superheroine who possess the same powers as Spider-Man. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this comic was written specifically for me. The same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker also bit Cindy, but unlike Peter, Cindy was taken away from her family and kept in isolation for years before being released by Peter Parker. Cindy returns to New York City to not only fight crime but to also discover the whereabouts of her family who has disappeared without a trace. The story follows Cindy as she tries to acclimate to the world that she hasn’t lived in for nearly a decade all while battling bad guys on a nightly basis. I absolutely love, love, LOVE, this series. Everything about it, from the writing to the art, to the character that is Cindy Moon just drew me and has kept me coming back. It’s absolutely brilliant.
Silk is currently in its second series. Monstress debuted in late 2015 and has fast become one of my favourite comics. It is incredible. If you haven’t read it, please do. You will not be disappointed, I promise. The world of Monstress is set in Asia at the beginning of the 20th century in an alternative universe that has magic, steampunk, dark forces and incredibly depicted in all the pages and panels of each issue. The story follows Maika as she tries to discover her past and her future all while on the run in the present with a dark and deadly secret trapped inside of her. Monstress is unflinching as it is beautiful. The story being told is so visceral and all-encompassing that it just draws you right in and keeps you in until the last panel. It’s an incredible story that is only in its infancy and I cannot wait so see what happens next.
Currently, only four issues have been released. You can buy them directly from Image Comics’ website, your local comic book store, or Comixology. The first trade in the series is slated to be released in July 2016.
